Trying to IM

I have the worst luck with instant messaging. I was just getting started with a conversation but soon after I hit send and my window closed. So I tried to continue our conversation but hit send again and the damn window closed again. Now I am not a gold member so I figured at some point I would collect enough points to get it for a month. This seems impossible because everytime I IM someone I loose points. The worst part is not knowing if our conversation would lead to more.
